As requested under my review of 42242, here's Unimog with wheels swapped to those from Bronco.

Does it look better?

LEGO 42242 Mercedes Unimog review part II Time to LEGO 42242 Mercedes Unimog review part II

Time to add some colour to the build!
I wonder why exactly Lime was chosen instead of standard Orange (or Reddish Orange), but it does look good with Red crane.

The cab itself is rather simple, but I like that its edge moves a bit, to accomodate length of A pillars. And speaking about those pillars - they are made with thin liftarms on Black and Lime, a visual trick used in many sets to have thick liftarms that look thin.
The 42213 Bronco arched mudguards fit perfectly in a Unimog.

Front grille looks simplified, maybe if those Black connectors were Lime it could look better. The printed shield with Mercedes star looks a bit out of scale (2x2 round tile would be perfect), but it's the same as in 42177, so I guess that LEGO had enough printed ones to use it here too.

I'm really pleased that this set can be universal as real Unimog, because at 2/3 of the building process we have completed truck with chassis ready for attachements.

And what about that missing 1/3? It's a standalone, folding pneumatic crane, with manual pump and two cylinders. Which, as each pneumatic module, is fun to use.

Divided into two main stages, with base and upper part it needs some attention for guiding the hoses, but it's much easier than 42043 turntable.

As you can see on the picture above, that's really STAND ALONE crane.

The last part of the build turns into tipper bed, simple and fast to build.
And that's it, model is completed.

More about functions at part III of this review

Oh, what's that? Model packed with functions and pneumatic in medium scale under 120€? Oh LEGO, you are too kind.

The official prices, at £109.99, $129.99, €119.99 are a bit too much for my taste, 100€ for 1189 parts this set provides would be fair price.

Let's start this review with one of the mistakes on the box - both pneumatic cylinders and pneumatic pump are labeled as cylinders. I know that most of the people will not care, but lately LEGO has problem with tiny text.

A parts were packed in paper bags, including smaller bags inside main ones and pneumatic hoses. Sticker sheet on other hand was just tossed inside the box, between bags. I miss the days when stickers were placed with instructions in a bag.

Whole set is surprisingly consistent in terms of part colours - there are mainly only 8 used, with not even one out of place like Coral connectors. A great Technic parts pack also, with suspension parts, pneumatic cylinders and gears.

First stages of the build are straightforward - more tinkering starts after making driven axles.
Which, after thorough testing, have flaws. But more about them later.

I like the fact that this Unimog has steering closer to real truck (and more realistic than 8110, the first Unimog) using links. Still wobbly and with lots of play between wheel hubs, but more realistic.

After placing all pieces from bags 1-4 we end with completed chassis, with working engine and four wheel drive. Bag 5 ads some colours to the build, but more about that in part II of this review ;)

What happens when you turn your head? Here you ca What happens when you turn your head?

Here you can see the common problem at exhibitions - model can be shown behind fencing tape or other obstacles, yet there's always someone who NEEDS TO TOUCH.

Usually it ends on trying to use knobs, but sometimes people damage models on purpose (either because they were kids with dumb parents or because that's ONLY LEGO and they BOUGHT A TICKET).

Here you can see @erictrax models with flattened cabs and my BatMan without a bat (and that middle finger, oh what a comedy).
